Cisco Secure Email Gateway unauth root RCE (CVE-2026-76519)
CVE-2026-76519
CVE-2026-76519: Cisco Secure Email Gateway AMP lets an unauthenticated email sender write files and run root commands. Actively exploited; apply Cisco fixes now.
Actively exploited in the wild - CVE-2026-76519 is a critical unauthenticated file-write and root command execution flaw in Cisco Secure Email Gateway with Advanced Malware Protection (AMP) and the file reputation service enabled that lets a remote attacker take full control of the underlying operating system by sending a single crafted email attachment. CISA has added it to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, confirming in-the-wild abuse - patch or isolate affected gateways immediately.
Overview
CVE-2026-76519 sits in the AMP attachment handling path of Cisco Secure Email Gateway. When the file reputation service is enabled, the gateway inspects attachments by processing them on the underlying host. Improper handling of those attachments lets a crafted file escape the intended processing boundary and be written to attacker-chosen locations on the operating system.
Because the written file can land in a path the system later executes, the attacker can escalate from “write a file” to “run commands as root.” No credentials, no user interaction, and no prior access are required. The attacker only needs the email address of a protected mailbox and the ability to send a message with a malicious attachment.
Impact
A successful exploit gives the attacker root on the email security appliance itself. That is a serious position:
- Full read access to all mail flowing through the gateway, including message bodies and attachments.
- Ability to modify or silently drop email, tamper with message content, or exfiltrate credentials and sensitive documents.
- A foothold inside the network perimeter that can be used to pivot to internal systems and Active Directory.
- Persistence mechanisms via root-level access to the appliance.
CVSS 9.8 reflects the combination of network reachability, low complexity, no privileges, and no user interaction. Any organization running an affected gateway in front of production mail is exposed the moment the device is reachable and processing mail.
Remediation and Mitigation
- Apply the Cisco security advisory for CVE-2026-76519 as the primary fix. Check the Cisco Security Advisories page for the exact fixed AsyncOS build for your hardware and virtual appliance models.
- If you cannot patch immediately, disable the AMP file reputation service on affected gateways. This removes the vulnerable code path, at the cost of reduced attachment analysis.
- Restrict management access to the gateway to trusted administrative networks and disable remote management from the public internet.
- Treat the gateway as potentially compromised. Review logs for unexpected file writes, outbound connections, and unusual process activity, and rotate any credentials or API keys stored or transiting the appliance.
- Monitor email flow for anomalous attachment types and unexpected outbound traffic from the gateway.
Cisco Secure Email Gateway is positioned as the last line of defense for inbound mail. A root-level exploit in that appliance turns the defense into an attack platform.
Security Insight
This is the second high-severity Cisco Secure Email Gateway issue in recent memory to reach active exploitation, following the earlier zero-day that also granted root command execution. The pattern suggests that email security appliances, which must parse hostile content from the entire internet by design, remain a soft target for attackers willing to invest in parsing flaws. The AMP attachment pipeline processes attacker-controlled files with system-level privileges, and that privilege boundary is the recurring weakness. See also the Cisco Secure Email Gateway zero-day actively exploited write-up for the prior incident, and Cisco’s broader SD-WAN Manager auth bypass and ISE zero-day advisories for context on the vendor’s edge-appliance exposure. For defenders, the takeaway is that perimeter security products deserve the same patch urgency as internet-facing web servers - and should be assumed compromised until proven otherwise.
